First Race For Raney

Catherine Raney took the ice for the first time today in Torino and placed 11th in the 3,000m speed skating competition. The Elm Grove, WI, native finished with a time of 4:10.44, which was good enough to put her in second place after 11 pairs. Unfortunately, such top skaters as Claudia Pechstein of Germany and Cindy Klassen of Canada had not yet raced. Klassen took the bronze behind Ireen Wurst and Renate Groenewold of the Netherlands. Raney still has a few more opportunities to come home with some hardware: she’s scheduled to compete in both the 1,500m and 5,000m events, as well as the Team Pursuit event later in the games.
