UK Soccer Gets Dairyland Flavor With DeMerit
I happily admit that I’m not a fan of soccer and totally skipped out on the whole World Cup thing, but I was pretty impressed to read in the New York Times today about a Dairy State native [free registration] making good in the FA Premier League. Jay DeMerit, originally from Green Bay, is a member of Watford F.C., a club located just north of London. Back in May he scored the first goal of a 3-0 victory over Leeds United, which earned Watford a promotion back into the Premier League after a six-year absence. DeMerit played soccer at the University of Illinois-Chicago and later played for the USL Chicago Fire before packing his bags to play in the UK. I’ll be sure to raise a pint a Guiness when Watford opens its campaign against Everton on August 19.

I’m English and a big fan of soccer, and seeing as I live in Watford, I support my local team! I only properly started following them recently, and this happened to be the same year that we signed DeMerit! Seeing as he’s a defender and I play defence, I decided to support him as my favourite player, and he’s done Green Bay proud!
He’s played extremely well (apart from the odd dodgy game) and has made himself a regular in the Premiership (England’s top league). Having read what he says about life in Green Bay, I just wanted to say hi to all you cheeseheads. Come on you Packers!
