Get Them To Sign On The Line Which Is Dotted
The Packers this week succeeded in negotiating a contract extension with tight end Donald Lee, inking a new four-year deal worth about $12 million. He was in the final year of the contract he had when Green Bay signed him from Miami.
General manager Ted Thompson takes a lot of heat from Packer Nation, including from this site, for nearly everything he does and does not do, but the knee-jerk FireTedThompson.com crowd should take note of how well he has done retaining and rewarding good players. Both Al Harris and Nick Barnett got new contracts over the off-season, and Donald Driver got a new deal after signing an extension the previous year. Now Lee, who is tied with James Jones for second-most receptions on the team with 29, gets his deal done.
I’m not saying that every decision TT makes is golden, but Aaron at Cheesehead TV makes the good point that the faction who criticize him for being tight-fisted just aren’t paying close attention. A lot of GMs out there chase broken-down players with piles of cash just because they have a name, and those teams end up on the scrap heap of rebuilding year after year.
