Mackey Wins Iditarod But DeNure Keeps Going

Early this morning it looks like defending Iditarod champion Lance Mackey pulled off back-to-back wins, but that doesn’t mean that The Last Great Race is over for the rest of the field.

Zoya DeNure, formerly of Madison, is still going strong and listed in 54th place. She left the checkpoint at Unalakleet about two o’clock this morning on her way to Shaktoolik, a leg of more than 40 miles along the Bering Sea coast. The good news is DeNure is less than 260 miles from the finish line at Nome.

Meanwhile, our other former Madison resident Anne Capistrant arrived at the checkpoint in Kaltag last night about 11 o’clock. It looks like she might be slowing down a bit but hasn’t dropped out, and just finishing this race is an achievement.

There is one other former Badger Stater that I’ve forgotten to mention. Trent Herbst was born and raised in Wisconsin and went to UW LaCrosse. He’s all the way back in 78th place, but still going strong.
