Favre Blinks? This Could Be The End

How’s this for an unexpected twist to the Brett Favre unretirement story: Bus Cook tells ESPN today that they have “no definite plans to ask for reinstatement.” Wha?

But it get’s even stranger. Favre’s agent went on to say, “we have until the sixth week [of the regular season] … We’re going to let Green Bay decide what they want to do. It’s their move.” Their move to do what, exactly?

Now Bus Cook has been a sports agent for a long time, he certainly knows that the Packers can’t (or won’t) line up a trade while Favre is still retired, and Ted Thompson has made it plain that he does not intend to release the star quarterback (no matter what Tom Silverstein says). So what’s going on here?

It could be that Cook’s call to Chris Mortensen, the Annoited Mouthpiece of Favreopolis, is just a bunch of smoke and mirrors to throw everybody off their game, but it could also be — as noted by packergeeks — that we’re approaching the end game. Favre doesn’t want to be traded and he knows he can’t rejoin the team as the starter, so maybe he’s decided to just stay retired.

So is that the sound of the other shoe dropping? It might be the best possible outcome for everyone that this point. Yes, some damage has already been done, but over time we’ll all forget about this sordid affair and go back to rooting for our football team instead of parsing official statements for hidden meaning.

Oh, and speaking of official statements, FOX News is airing part three of Favre’s interview with Greta Van Susteren tonight. The last couple nights must have been quite a bump in the ratings.

Translation: “Brett Favre has no interest in coming back to Green Bay as anything but a starter. But you’ll have the contractual ability, up until week 6, to take him back as the starter when Aaron Rodgers (aka Glass Joe) goes down with an injury or you come to your freaking senses. Whichever comes first.”
