Favre Can Still Class It Up
It’s no secret here that I’m disappointed in the way that Brett Favre has handled himself in attempting to come out of retirement. I think his demand to Mike McCarthy in June that the Packers “give me my helmet or give me my release” was selfish and unfair, and his interview on Greta Van Susteren’s show was just self-serving rhetoric. His actions have put the Green Bay Packers in a bind, put his teammates in a terrible situation, and torn Packer Nation asunder.
At the same time, I can’t stop liking the man. His 16 seasons in Green Bay — the good and the bad — will forever be an important part of Packer history and a constant reminder of why this team is the finest franchise in the NFL. And despite everything that has happened the past few weeks, I still get all gushy when he says the right things about the team, like he did at the Hall of Fame ceremony last night:
If you’re a hardened cynic, I suppose you might say Favre’s performance yesterday was calculated to win back support from the Green Bay fans, but I think those words last night came from the heart and not from the Bus Cook negotiating playbook. That’s the way we fans want to — and should — remember him.
He’ll always be a Packer no matter how this all plays out.

Personally, I’m past the point of exasperation with BLF, and it bugs the hell out of me how he threw Mike McCarthy and James Campen under the bus during his deranged little FOX news soliloquoy. But as I was telling a friend the other day, I do have moments when I say, “Yeah, the man is a melodramatic nutbar, but dammit…he’s still OUR fricking nutbar.”
