A Packer For The Ages

Herman Schneidman
Herman Schneidman, who played for Green Bay from 1935 to 1939, died yesterday at the age of 95 years old. He was the oldest living Packer. Schneidman played blocking back (what we now call fullback) and won two NFL titles with the team in 1936 and again in 1939.
For a lot of younger fans, Green & Gold history begins and ends with Brett Favre. Others, and I’ll admit I’m guilty of this, focus too much at times on the Vince Lombardi era. It’s important to remember, though, that next year marks the 90th season of Packer football, and without such players as Tony Canadeo, Don Hutson, and all the unheralded guys like Herm Schneidman there would be no legend of Curly Lambeau, no Lombardi, no 12 championships, and probably no football in Green Bay today.
That history, and the men who made it, is why we’re all Green & Gold fans, and why being a Packer supporter is such a special thing.
