Lombardi: Packers Will Add A Tight End

Michael Lombardi is a smart football guy, but I don’t think he knows Ted Thompson or Mike McCarthy all that well. In his Morning Diner News column today at The National Football Post, Lombardi addresses the tight end situation in Green Bay — using Jason Wilde’s story from yesterday about Evan Moore as a jumping off point — and concludes, “I have no doubt that they will claim a player off of the wire.”

Now I’m not saying that TT won’t add another TE to the mix before the end of pre-season, but unless someone gets hurt I don’t see it happening. A big part of the philosophy now at 1265 Lombardi Ave. is that they can make guys into football players rather than signing free agent veterans; just look at how they’ve approached the offensive line the past three years for proof. TT might not draft for need, but need — often dire need — is what drives his free agent signing.

I don’t see Humphrey’s situation being as dire as some are predicting, just because he had a rough game Monday night and then got hurt. MM seems to really like the guy so I think they’ll stick with him, adjusting the offense if he’s unable to play the first few games by inserting Jermichael Finley into the lineup in limited action. I’m sure that they would rather see him get back on the field and prove himself in the final two pre-season games, but I don’t think he’s in danger of being cut just yet.

I would tend to agree with you, but it wouldn’t shock me for TT to maybe send a low round pick or one of our 10,000 WRs for a decent TE.
