With The First Whack Of The Axe

So DeShawn Wynn goes but Scorpio Babers stays? Football is a strange business.

The Packers made their first roster reductions today to get to the 75-man limit before tomorrow’s deadline without too many surprises. Oft-injured running back Wynn, a seventh-round pick in the draft a year ago, was among those getting the axe, much to the delight of Bobby O’Shea who likens the former Florida Gator to “Najeh Davenport, without the poop.” (A little harsh, no? Najeh played OK in a few games. Come to think of it, so did Wynn. Alright, well played Mr. O’Shea.) Wide receiver Chris Francies also got the boot today, providing an example to the rest of the wideouts not to ever make Aaron Rodgers look bad in a pre-season game.

The biggest, most important news of the day, though, was that Justin Harrell was placed on the physically unable to perform list, with Ted Thomspon revealing at a press conference that the first-round draft pick will be undergoing yet another surgical proceedure to try and correct his back injury. Packergeeks chimes in, “Harrell should have been placed on the NHBAPDBIPBD (Never Has Been Able to Perform Due to Being Injured Prior to Being Drafted) list.”

You have to laugh just so you don’t cry.

I really wasn’t that surprised by yesterday’s cuts. I knew that Wynn really had no shot of making the team. I thought the Packers might have given him another week to prove himself though and if he would have got hurt (which he probably would have with his injury history) they could have stashed him on IR.

As far as Harrell is concerned I hop he can come back and contribute this season. A lot of people are already considering him a bust but I think that is a little premature. He has had a lot of injuries and hasn’t done a lot yet but I would give him at least next season before I can him a bust since if he can get over the injuries I think he could be a pretty good defensive tackle.

It probably is too early to make a call on Harrell, but I’m still calling it: He’s a bust.

I just like to take very possible opportunity to say “poop.”
